On this date in 1999, we commemorate the recording period of The Marshall Mathers LP, Eminem's explosive second major-label studio album that would go on to become one of the fastest-selling albums in rap history.

Background

Following the success of The Slim Shady LP, Eminem worked with Dr. Dre and a team of producers to create an even more ambitious and controversial project. The album would explore themes of fame, family conflict, and societal criticism through Eminem's unique blend of dark humor and raw emotion.

Notable Tracks

  • The Real Slim Shady - A satirical take on pop culture and celebrity
  • Stan (feat. Dido) - A haunting narrative about obsessive fandom
  • The Way I Am - Eminem's response to media criticism and commercial pressure
  • Kim - A controversial track depicting a violent relationship
  • Criminal - The album's provocative closer

Cultural Impact

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 1.76 million copies in its first week - the fastest-selling studio album by any solo artist at the time. It won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and has been certified diamond by the RIAA.

Despite (or perhaps because of) its controversial content, the album sparked important conversations about artistic freedom, violence in media, and the line between character and artist.

Legacy

The Marshall Mathers LP is frequently cited as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time and solidified Eminem's status as one of rap's most technically skilled and commercially successful artists.

Produced almost entirely by RZA, the album featured a grimy, stripped-down sound built on obscure soul samples, kung-fu movie dialogue, and minimalist beats. This raw aesthetic was revolutionary for its time and influenced countless hip-hop producers.

C.R.E.A.M. became one of the group's signature songs, combining vivid street narratives with a haunting piano loop from The Charmels' "As Long As I've Got You."

Legacy

The album has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA and is frequently cited in lists of the greatest hip-hop albums ever made. It launched the solo careers of all nine members and established Wu-Tang as a cultural phenomenon that transcended music.

Mozart's "Don Giovanni" premieres in Prague

On November 9, 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni" had its world premiere at the Estates Theatre in Prague. This masterpiece of dramatic opera would become one of the most celebrated works in the operatic repertoire.

Don Giovanni's World Premiere

On November 9, 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni" (full title: Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni, literally "The Rake Punished, namely Don Giovanni") had its triumphant world premiere at the Estates Theatre in Prague.

The Creation

Mozart composed this opera seria in two acts to an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The work was commissioned following the enormous success of The Marriage of Figaro in Prague the previous year.

Legend has it that Mozart finished writing the overture the night before the premiere, with the ink barely dry when the orchestra received their parts for the morning rehearsal.

The Story

The opera tells the tale of Don Giovanni, a libertine nobleman who seduces women across Europe. His adventures lead to his ultimate downfall when he murders the father of one of his conquests and later encounters the statue of his victim, which drags him down to hell.

Musical Innovation

Don Giovanni represents a perfect fusion of comic and tragic elements, creating what Mozart called a "dramma giocoso" (joyful drama). The opera features some of Mozart's most memorable arias, including:

  • "Madamina, il catalogo è questo" (Catalogue Aria)
  • "Là ci darem la mano" (duet)
  • "Deh, vieni alla finestra" (serenade)
  • "Don Giovanni, a cenar teco" (finale)

Reception and Legacy

The Prague premiere was an overwhelming success. The audience demanded multiple encores, and the opera was performed repeatedly throughout the season.

The work was later performed in Vienna in 1788, with some modifications made by Mozart himself. Today, Don Giovanni is considered one of the greatest operas ever written, praised by composers from Beethoven to Richard Wagner, who called it "the opera of all operas."

The character of Don Giovanni has inspired countless adaptations and interpretations across all artistic media, making him one of the most enduring figures in Western culture.
